Interactions between cancer and immune cells via cytokine networks

01/04/2014 by Philippe Fixe, PhD No Comments
Tumor-induced perturbations of cytokines and immune cell networks

Pr. Ruo-Pan Huang’s team has just published a review detailing the interactions between cancer and immune cells.

This overview describes the key cytokine signals, cell–cell signal networks in the tumor microenvironment during cancer diseases. It also demonstrates the power of antibody arrays and multiplex immunoassays as unique research tools to decipher cytokine networks during cancer and inflammation processes.

in vitro exploration of hepatobiliary drug disposition

31/03/2014 by Jean-François Têtu, PhD No Comments

What is an integrated hepatic model and why is it important?

An integrated in vitro model maintains physiologic cellular components and processes at in vivo-relevant amounts. In the sandwich-cultured hepatocyte model, relevant drug transporter proteins (uptake and efflux), as well as drug metabolizing enzymes (Phase I and II), are expressed, maintained, and functioning together in the same system. The figure below graphically represents this concept (picture from Qualyst Transporter Solutions).

Lower background fluorescence in live cell imaging

28/03/2014 by Jean-François Têtu, PhD No Comments

Study of living tissues has gained wide spread application in microscopy with the advent of fluorescent dyes and inverted microscopes dedicated to their viewing. A critical component is maintaining physiological conditions in media formulations, including pH and osmolarity, without contributing to background fluorescence. Most cells are grown in media formulations that use bicarbonate buffers, requiring the continuous presence of CO2 to maintain physiological pH. Just 15 minutes outside a CO2 incubator can change the pH from 7.4 to 8.1, and to 8.7 after an hour.
