3 solutions for optimal cryopreservation of mammalian cells and tissues
Cell viability after cryopreservation is a sensitive subject as it may be dependent on the ability of mammalian cells to face the stress generated by the freeze / thaw cycles. Improving cell viability whilst maintaining optimal cellular functions and pathways has thus become a challenge. In this post, we invite you to take a look at 3 optimized reagents to improve cellular viability after cryopreservation with serum-free and protein-free CryoStor cryopreservation freeze media solutions.
Cryopreservation of mammalian cells and tissues – what is it all about?
CryoStor products are designed to prepare and preserve cells in ultra-low temperature (-80°C to -196°C) environments.
They provide a safe, protective environment for cells and tissues during the freezing, storage and thawing process. Through modulating the cellular biochemical responses to the cryopreservation process, CryoStor provides enhanced cell viability and functionality while eliminating the need to include serum, proteins or elevated levels of cytotoxic agents.
CryoStor products are manufactured under strict cGMP guidelines, with USP components and meet USP 71 and 85 (respectively sterility and endotoxin). They are serum-free, protein-free and animal-free.
To guarantee high-quality, all CryoStor products are tested for pH, appearance, and bio-preservation efficacy via cell-based assay.
Which CryoStor cryopreservation medium to choose for your mammalian cells and tissues ?
CryoStor is available in three different pre-formulations:
CryoStor CS10 – with 10% DMSO – has demonstrated remarkable bio-preservation efficacy in numerous cell types.
CS10 is recommended for the cryopreservation of primary hepatocytes, tissue samples, human peripheral blood and PBMCs, CHO cells, myeloma cell lines, hybridoma, human mesenchymal stem cells, human embryonic and human induced pluripotent stem cells (ES cells and iPS cells) and other extremely sensitive types of primary cells.
CryoStor CS5 – with 5% DMSO – routinely outperforms competing freeze media containing 10% DMSO.
CryoStorCS2 – with 2% DMSO – even in the presence of greatly reduced levels of DMSO it has demonstrated in some cell types bio-preservation efficacy at or above the levels of other commercial and in-house formulated freeze-media.
CS10 is the most widely utilized variant. However, CryoStor CS5 and CS2 have also been widely adopted by many researchers, and usage is typically dictated by cell system tolerance to DMSO balanced against acceptable levels of post-preservation recovery.
