Methylation of Lysine 27 of Histone H3 (H3K27) is a “silencing mark” associated with imprinting and X chromosome activation. JMJD3 is a histone demethylase that demethylates di- and trimethyl-lysine 27 on histone H3. JMJD3 also plays important roles in HOX gene activation, inflammation, and macrophage differentiation.
